What city/suburb would be the best for a lesbian couple looking to move in an artsy/downtown area?

Currently residing in the South, my partner and I are looking for an east coast city that offers an artistic feel with plenty of art galleries as well as nightlife. An area close to or not far from a big city that is lesbian / gay friendly. A place that feels like your not to far from what's going on ( if you know what I mean) Our ideal goal is to be a driving distance from Rhode Island (6 hours at most) I hope anyone can offer insight for us! Our options are wide open and our canvas is blank. Any ideas would be appreciated. Thank you!
